Copenhagen, Denmark - A Child Friendly Place to Vacation

When you and your family are sitting around the dining room table trying to decide where you want to spend your next vacation, Copenhagen, Denmark may not be your first choice. But you may want to look into a bit more. Denmark has a lot to offer and Copenhagen is a very child friendly place to vacation.
A vacation spot needs to cater to everyone in the family and Copenhagen and the surrounding area has something for everyone. Let's look at some of things Denmark has to offer a visitor or expat in the realm of entertainment.
If you start you holiday off in Copenhagen, the capitol, you have access to lots of museums, amusement parks, zoos and beaches. In the heart of Copenhagen stands Tivoli, which is probably the most visited place in Denmark and has one of the world's best roller coaster "The Demon" and lots more attractions for both adults and children.
A great day with the children is Zoologisk Have or the Zoo, where there is a large array of animals from all over the world, including local species. There is a fantastic petting zoo and you can even climb the Zoo Tower and get an excellent overview of Copenhagen. There are buses from downtown that take you directly to the zoo's front gate - 10 to 15 minute ride!
And if you need more animal life, take a trip to Charlottelund and visit the Aquarium, which houses has all sorts of aquatic life including sharks, stingrays and even the most venomous fish in the world - the "reef stonefish"! The Aquarium is just north of the city and easily reached by train in about 20 minutes.
Another short bus ride away are several beaches, which are lots of fun for both adults and children. In town there are several swimming areas along the harbour, which are safe, clean and secure and very popular with locals and tourists. The two best beaches are Amager Strandparken in Amager or Bellevue (very small beach but nice location), which is in Klampenborg across from the Dyrehaven (animal park).
The Dyrehaven is a great place to explore either by bicycle or walking or by horse drawn carriage. Inside you will find wild deer and other forest creatures and even a famous amusement park called "Bakken". The "Bakken" is free to enter; you just pay for your rides.
If you are into museums, there is the Experimentarium which is full of hands on activities for the playful adult and adventurous children, there are other museums where you can indulge in war history, science and technology, art and crafts and many more things. Many of the museums cater to children with hands on activities and even dressing up in costumes.
Another great things about vacationing in Copenhagen is that there are so many things to see and do that are absolutely free or cost very little. If you are a bit adventurous rent a bicycle and go exploring the streets of Copenhagen. With the amount of bike paths available, cycling is a safe and fun way to explore.
Don't forget to sample the local food - you have not been to Denmark until you have had a poelse from a real poelsevogn. That is a hotdog from a hotdog vendor. Make sure you get everything on it. It may sound strange - but you want the roasted onions and the raw onions, the remoulade and even the special pickles - agurker!
Sample the various pastries - a Danish pastry in Denmark is not the same as those you get back in the states or the UK. A must have when you visit. Also the Danes love their ice cream and you should stop by and get an "isvaffel med floedebolle". It's 2 scoops of ice cream (flavor of choice), topped with freshly whipped cream, strawberry jam & a coconut cream puff on top!!!! DELICIOUS!
Once you worn out from all the sightseeing and activities, there are always the great parks, lakes and nature reserves to explore. You can rent kayaks along the coast and harbour areas, rent bikes in most camping areas and there is even golfing for dad or mom.
